There were a total of 42 million visitors to China in 1993, although many of these were from Hong Kong and Macau. The country attracted more than 4 million foreign visitors in 1993, and was the fifth-largest destination in Asia. The country's travel and tourism policy is determined by the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA), which has 10 departments covering areas such as finance and foreign currency control, international liaison and resource development.

The Republic of the Philippines comprises an archipelago of 7,107 islands. 1998 is the Philippines centennial anniversary of independence from Spain, and is also 'Visit the Philippines Year'. Travel and tourism's contribution to GDP was estimated at 8.7% in 1997, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. Average daily spending by visitors to the Philippines was $144 in 1997, down 5% on 1996, with accommodation the main item of expenditure.

Kenya
Article Abstract:
Kenya has become a popular African tourist venue and the tourist industry is one of the mainstays of its economy, but recession and competition from nearby nations has reduced demand. In 1995, tourist numbers fell by some 21%. However, it is expected that matters will improve and further growth can be achieved to reach the target of one million visitors by 2000.
