Former EC men on fraud charge
Article Abstract:
An investigation by Belgian police has led to the arrest of Georges Tzoanos and Pascal Chatillon, who were senior officers in the tourism unit of the European Commission in 1989-1994. It is alleged that they were involved in falsifying documents and in illegal diversion of funds in the allocation of European Union subsidies to the tourist industry. This case has damaged many years of work in giving tourism a high profile within the European Union agenda, according to Edward Macmillan Scott, a leading member of the European Parliament on tourism affairs.

Inside Europe
Article Abstract:
The European Parliament has recently issued a report which proposes a special VAT rate for the tourism and hospitality sector. Other suggestions include co-ordinated promotion of Europe; and an increase in funds for the tourist sector from the EU budget. The report is due for discussion in February 1996. It is argued that the report priortises contributions by industry rather than EU institutions.
