Older people are set to play an increasingly significant part in the expansion of the UK leisure industry, which was worth more than 72 billion pounds sterling in 1997. Almost one in five people aged over 65 participate in sport for at least an hour a week, and there will be a 5.8% rise in eating out among those aged between 45 and 54 in the period to the year 2000. The UK population is gradually ageing, but there will be some revival in the number of people aged between 15 and 24. This is a positive trend, as leisure spending is high in this age group.

There is potential for further expansion in nightclubs, health and fitness centres, tenpin bowling/family entertainment centres and cinemas in Europe, according to Alistair Dixon of Bankers Trust, speaking at the second Leisure Property in Europe conference in May 1998. Urban centres are evolving, and this will make it necessary to consider the opportunity to include other activities.
