Living on a budget
Article Abstract:
The UK's budget hotel sector is growing rapidly, up 25% in 1997, according to figures from a survey by Deloitte & Touche Hospitality and Leisure Consulting. The second UK Budget Hotel Survey shows that the market is expected to reach more than 900 budget hotels in the UK by 2002. New entrants to the sector include designer hotels, offering in-room facilities, such as direct dial telephones and Sky TV. It is forecast that the current sector leaders will continue to dominate the market, although it is expected that one current major brand will seek market dominance.

Economy drive
Article Abstract:
The UK budget hotel industry may suffer from an insufficient supply of suitable sites to build new outlets in the future. Budget hotels only supply some 2.5%-3% of beds in the UK hotel market. There are almost 27,500 budget hotel rooms in the UK, an increase of 19% between 1998-1999. It is anticipated the number of rooms may increase to 71,600 by the year 2003. Some large operators have claimed their bed occupancy rate is at 90%. It is predicted some operators may be affected by the need to raise prices, which may take them outside the budget market.
