Writing on the WLRA
Article Abstract:
The World Leisure and Recreation Association conference took place in Cardiff, Wales, from July 15-19 1996. Most of the 220 speeches were based on all kinds of leisure, but 40 focused on tourism and 25 on sport, with four of them focusing on sports tourism. Sheffield Hallam University's Simon Holiday was among those who spoke of people in the UK having too little or too much leisure because of unemployment or increased working hours. Some speeches looked at women's lack of leisure in a changing society. There was some indication that the idea of increased leisure is not accurate.

Growth industry
Article Abstract:
The UK leisure industry is expected to record growth of 2.5% in spending volume in 2000 after a slow down during 1998 which saw growth of only 1.6%. The industry has been boosted by low interest rates and a return of consumer confidence. The 1998 leisure market was kept depressed by large numbers of people staying at home to watch the 1998 Football World Cup and a very wet summer. The 1999 market will be helped by late interest in Millennium celebrations and increased spending power.
