Lord Montagu
Article Abstract:
Lord Montagu has been able to conserve Beaulieu Estate, Hampshire, England through income generated from tourism. Financial pressures forced the public opening on Apr 8 1952 and a self-supporting venture has been developed. A commitment to quality has ensured success and all attractions are in keeping with a historic house. The National Motor Museum exhibits cars from past and present and attracts 98% of Beaulieu visitors. Lord Montagu was a founder of the Historic House Association which influences government policy.

Taking a broader view
Article Abstract:
The announcement by Rank that it may build its first Oasis holliday village in northern France if plans for a village in Kent are not approved is an example of how the UK is in danger of losing investment capital from the leisure industry. Tussauds Group is now opening a theme park near Barcelona, Spain, after having been unable to agree plans for a theme park in the UK, and these and other cases show that the UK seems to be unable to establish an acceptable agenda for development.

The Department of National Heritage (DNH) was set up to combine the different sections of the leisure industry and eliminate duplications. At a seminar Peter Brooke, Secretary of State said that the leisure ministry wanted tourist boards, Arts and Sports Council and English Heritage to link up to create opportunities and pool resources. Regional seminars will follow, to include local authorities and non-sponsored organisations in the debate.
