Man with a mission to put Norway on the map
Article Abstract:
Svein-Erik Ovesen, Director-General of the Norwegian tourist board Nortra, has introduced a range of new strategies during his first year with Nortra. These include the re-distribution of finance away from poorly-performing countries to new markets including Poland, amd a drive to move Norwegian hotels into more accessible areas. Ovesen also plans to ensure that people know more about Norway and find it easier to book a holiday. This strategy will incorporate campaigns which direct potential customers to an Internet site with more information and a direct booking system.

Airlines stack up to hit the Net
Article Abstract:
Major airlines worldwide are opening up sites on the World Wide Web to market flights direct to Internet users. The Internet is perceived as a comparatively cheap and expedient medium, with customers able to pay by credit card in their domestic currency. German airline Lufthansa expects to sell as much as a quarter of its seats direct via the Internet by 2005, with Lufthansa also selling published fare seats for all IATA airlines. Lufthansa believes travel agents will need to diversify to maintain pace with the changing booking trends.

London show just grows and grows
Article Abstract:
The World Travel Market exhibition will be held at the Earl's Court exhibition centre in London, UK, although the venue is increasingly being perceived as too small to meet the demands of the show's growing popularity. Discovery '98 will be held on the final two days of the exhibition to allow exhibitors to offer competitions, educational seminars and incentives for travel agents. Agents were required to pay an entrance fee in 1997 but can now obtain free entry by pre-registering.
