NY leads way from Europe

The three New York airports are expected to see international arrivals rise by 2.5% in 1996 from 1995 to 40 million. John F Kennedy International Airport handled 17 million international passengers in 1995, and aims to make extensive investment in order to improve its facilities. Existing terminals are being refurbished, while a new 11-gate terminal is planned for completion in 1998. At Newark International Airport, a $120 million international arrivals facility opened in Jan 1996.

Taiwanese carriers compete as they wait to make Taipei a gateway to mainland China

The upgrading of Chiang Kai-shek airport in Taiwan is essential if it is to be recognised as a main business centre. A second terminal is currently under construction, with completion anticipated for 1998. EVA Air is set to launch 16 weekly flights for Taipei/Hong Kong. Demand for air travel could be boosted significantly by the economic development of China, and Hong Kong and Macau are both preparing their airports for extra business.

Pirate parts pose threat to airlines
Article Abstract:
SAS has recently had to replace several wing cables following a warning by the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA). The FAA warned that the cables may be unauthorised. To date, cable supplier Jacman Aircraft has failed to confirm their authenticity. Unauthorised parts come from crashed or old planes no longer in service. Maintenance staff have to be vigilant to detect them before they are installed.
