The leisure industry has largely welcomed Labour's plans for the lottery in its White Paper, The People's Lottery. A sixth good cause, the New Opportunities Fund, will divert 1 billion pounds into education, health and environmental schemes. Also healthy living centres are to be created, promoting health and fitness in deprived areas, and a National Endowment for Science, Technology and Arts is to be created.

Leisure becomes an essential

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has produced a report showing that leisure is an integral part of most people's lives. The report shows that whilst there has been an increase in poverty, the definition of poverty has changed. Leisure activities and hobbies are considered to be essential by 78% of the population in the United Kingdom.
