New labour new ground
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party has expressed a firm commitment to the tourist industry, and claims that it will introduce measures to ensure that tourism flourishes if it wins the next general election. In its 'Breaking New Ground' document, it makes a number of pledges, including improving marketing of UK tourism, both domestically and abroad, and creating more jobs and training opportunities in the sector. The party highlights the fact that the UK now has a 3.6 billion pounds sterling balance of payments deficit on tourism services, from 571 million pounds sterling in the mid-1980s.

Fly in the ointment: The popularity of the docu-soap has meant even 'normal' people working hotels, or just having driving lessons, can now be tv stars
Article Abstract:
Fly-on-the-wall documentaries can be a double-edged sword for leisure operators, who must decide whether the publicity will be good publicity. Operators will not have editorial control and coverage can have adverse affects. Modern Times about Alton Towers was based on its marketing techniques and a spokesperson believes it was successful because of the definite storyline. Forest Mere health farm was featured in a five week tv series and although it made excellent viewing it did not present the resort as a salubrious haven of relaxation.
