Vancouver, British Columbia-based restaurateur Bud Kanke's 260-seat Joe Fortes Seafood restaurant has become an acclaimed establishment. The popular eatery, which began operating in 1985, served more than 250,000 mollusks to patrons in 2000 alone, and generated more than $7 million in sales. It is the only Vancouver-based restaurant holding of Kanke Seafood Restaurants Ltd. The restaurateur attributes Joe Fortes' success to a number of key factors, including its timeless design, quality food, informal yet highly professional service and convivial ambience.

Canadian franchisors are capitalizing on the worldwide acceptance of North American franchise concepts and are now launching their own efforts to set up global operations. Industry analysts said that the potential for higher profits lure Canadian franchisors with strong domestic operations. However, several measures should be adopted by Canadian franchisors to limit risks and boot the chanches of success such conducting preliminary investigations on the particular foreign market, with focus on the political, economic and social factors.
