British prime minister John Major has outlined plans to improve British sport in the 'Raising the Game' document. The British Academy of Sport is to be developed to offer the best training, coaching, science, and medicine for sports people. The 100 million pound sterling Academy will cater for all the major sports, although details have yet to be given. Details of how the role of sports in schools is being improved are also given.

Several important redevelopment and tourist projects have failed during 1999 as a direct result of falling tourist numbers and a failure to stir the minds of the population concerning the Millennium. The vast amount of money spent on new projects could have been directed towards improving the struggling museums and cultural centres within the UK or by ensuring admission to the most important centres is free.
