Article Abstract:
Many delegates attending a leisure management seminar on National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) and Investors In People (IIP) believe that leisure operators have been left largely uninformed about the implementation of training, with little help from lead bodies. A need for dialogue between the industry and policy makers is emphasised and the importance of implementing a national standard of performance is underlined. The key to cooperation is seen to be partnership between training and educational organisations and the leisure industry.

Article Abstract:
The arena and stadia industry is being called upon to invest heavily in staff training to improve facilities management. The Taylor Report focused on physical improvements to stadia rather than on educating management, with later research showing staff need to be trained to successfully maintain the safety and comfort of facilities. Fifty thousand people are employed in the arena and stadia industry, with investment in operations reaching 800 million pounds sterling during 1990-1994 while investment in training has been considerably lower.
