Slump sparks cutbacks across Asia
Article Abstract:
The economic crisis in Asia is having a mainly negative effect on tourism in the region. Some tourists are worried that the quality of holidays will be lower, airlines have cut back on flights and some countries are closing overseas tourist offices. Arrivals in Vietnam during the first half of 1998 were 15% lower than in the same period in 1997 and visitors to Singapore during May 1998 were 6% lower than in May 1997. Tourists are rejecting Indonesia due to the additional problems of fires and political turmoil, but Thailand is doing well due to the competitive prices coupled with a quality product.
