Specifying seats
Article Abstract:
The selection of seating for an auditorium or theatre is discussed. The needs of a cinema, concert hall, theatre and conference centres are not the same. At a concert hall or theatre the audience needs to be able to sit in comfort for around two hours or so without being too comfortable. Also the correct level of intimacy has to be reached so that the audience can participate correctly. Additionally the angle of the stage has to be taken into consideration. In a cinema, where sounds are amplified, seats can be wider apart. In a conference centre, there should be greater spacing, and writing facilities. The height and weight of the average person is increasing, and so is the bottom-size, resulting in a lower seating capacity. Other factors affecting choice of seating are also discussed.

Cinema paradox
Article Abstract:
The large format theatre industry in the US is growing so rapidly that it is encountering a shortage of correct format films, such as 3D 15 perf/70mm. Film-making on such formats is very expensive, with a 40 minute film costing up to $10 million. Plans to install projectors to run 3D films in smaller theatres were announced by Imax Corporation, as well as the opening of 60 new venues by the end of 1998. Imax plans to invest $100 million by 2000, as part of a programme to improve distribution, production and 3D cameras.

Points of Control: Specifying AV installations can be daunting
Article Abstract:
Audi-visual (AV) installations must be reliable and this can be achieved through the use of solid state technology. Installations should not use the latest technology inappropriately and many good effects can be achieved through using conventional technology. The use of standard equipment will mean easy maintenance and ease of replacement, and site control equipment should be located away from displays in suitable ambient conditions.
