Tom Pendry on tourism
Article Abstract:
It is essential if the UK's fragmented tourist industry is to become cohesive that it receives state support. Tourism, which covers over 200,000 public and private concerns, is a powerful industry within the economy, yet the UK's share of the world tourist market has fallen in the past 30 years. In response, the state has reduced tourism support and curtailed the operations of the English Tourist Board. If the Labour Party comes to power it will strengthen the state's interest in tourism through a new Development of Tourism Act, aimed at improving standards and service in the tourist industry.

Tom Pendry: the whole of society has a stake in football and it is up to government to assist in creating a framework for football to prosper once more
Article Abstract:
The shadow minister for sport Tom Pendry believes that Labour's Charter for Football would constructively rejuvenate football, helping to avert the crisis due to the re-emergence of hooligans on the terraces and bad behaviour by some players. The Charter would create a Task Force for Football to assess some of the problems in the game, with government deciding on what action to be taken.

Article Abstract:
Shadow Minister for Sport and Tourism Tom Pendry believes there is a lack of support and vision given to the tourism and leisure sector by the government. The value of tourism to the economy is worth about 36 billion pounds sterling a year and Pendry feels that tourism and leisure are important in social terms as people work longer hours and face more stress.
