Tourism blues
Article Abstract:
Increased foreign travel and fewer overseas visitors have caused a downturn in the British tourist industry. Recession has further reduced the amount of disposable income spent on leisure products. Attendances at the major fee charging attractions has fallen. Leisure investment has declined. Overseas visitors have been discouraged by unfavourable exchange rates and high cost of accommodation. Control of tourism by the Department of National Heritage may hinder future development.

Breaking away: Tourism is growing relentlessly, but the British are changing their behaviour
Article Abstract:
UK tourism is worth almost 30 billion pounds sterling a year, representing a 4% share of GDP. Foreign tourists to the UK usually stay in London but British tourists usually head for the West Country, although London is popular for short breaks. Domestic tourists usually organise their own trips, although package trips are being developed through initiatives such as hotel mini breaks. There is high demand for short breaks as consumers supplement their annual holidays.

Competition across the channel
Article Abstract:
The economic competitiveness of short breaks in France threatens British hotel's weekend trade. Continental breaks are easy to arrange and travelling times no greater than in Britain. The greater volume of cross-Channel travel with the opening of the Channel Tunnel will stimulate competition for weekend business. Travel and accommodation packages to France compete favourably with British hotel prices.
