Competition puts brake on soaring room rates
Article Abstract:
The dramatic increase in the number of hotel rooms available in Prague since the new post-communist economy of 1990, has brought down price of hotel rooms to a more reasonable level. Over 45,000 rooms are now available in 1995, in contrast to only 8,000 rooms in 1990. Prague has a thriving tourism industry, which means that each room still has an average 65% occupancy. The 23% VAT has been a cause of concern for Prague hoteliers, who feel that this will have an effect over the city's popularity with tourists.
