Windward and Leeward Islands
Article Abstract:
The number of tourists to the Windward and Leeward Islands reached 798,000 in 1996 from 312,600 in 1980. Tourists spent $872.3 million in 1995 compared with $670 million in 1990. A lack of direct flights and hurricanes are seen as drawbacks to the growth of the tourist industry. Although already a popular holiday destination, the Windward and Leeward Islands still have to compete on price with cheaper options in the Caribbean. A growth area is all-inclusive packages, with all the Islands offering a full range of hotel accommodation. Visitor numbers are seasonally influenced.

The Pacific Islands are distanced from the major tourist generating regions of the world, and tourism represents just 0.15% of world international arrivals. There are three main geographical groups of islands, Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia. Many of the Islands depend on subsistence agriculture, fishing and animal husbandry for basic foodstuffs, although they benefit from international aid.
