Five of the less-crowded fishing holes between Anchorage and Petersburg are featured. These include: Blind Slough for king salmon; Silver Lake near Chitina for rainbow trout; Port Valdez for pink salmon; the Little Susitna stream near Wasilla for silver salmon; and Landmark Gap for lake trout.

The Tongass National Forest in Alaska's southern panhandle offers some of the finest fishing in the state or anywhere. Cabins are available for $20 a night and can be reserved up to six months in advance. The fishing is said to be best during the summer months.

Fishing in the Ketchikan area of Alaska and on the Naha River is very good. The off-season offers travelers a relaxed time and surprisingly good weather in the area. Heckman Lake is also a good spot.
