Alliances rewrite rules of frequent-flier game: confusion sets in as airlines merge programs
Article Abstract:
The new airline alliances appear to indicate less benefits for frequent-flier travelers. In 1997, major US airlines had a decrease of 152,000 free round-trips on popular routes for frequent-fliers. Another disturbing trend is the number of blackout days when mileage awards cannot be used, or the reduced number of award seats on certain flights. One advantage is that the alliances do provide an opportunity to earn bonus points on other airlines.

Predatory or just competitive: DOT faces some tough calls
Article Abstract:
The Dept of Transporation's decision to examine charges from small airlines that larger airlines use predatory measures to maintain their market share is good, but will unlikely yield any long-term results. Airlines should consider quality when setting prices, much like hotels, to prevent such competition.

Big-airline alliances: plus or monopoly threat?
Article Abstract:
Six major airlines have announced business alliances to improve customer service. They do not consider these corporate mergers because they will maintain separate managements. This development may mean expanded benefits, but the demand may lead to a decrease in the number of frequent flier seats.
