Article Abstract:
The US Supreme Court has heard several cases related to health care. The High Court is expected to issue a decision in the summer of 1997 on the constitutionality of physician-assisted suicide. The Court also ruled that communications between a patient and psychotherapist are confidential. The Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which among other things, allows people to keep their health insurance during periods of unemployment. The attorneys general of 23 states sued the tobacco industry to recover the Medicaid costs of treating smokers.

Hospitals often overcharge patients through human accounting error, by automatic billing for items and services not used or by double billing of rescheduled or re-done tests. Patients should ask their physician for expected costs, and keep a daily inventory.
