Echoes of the past
Article Abstract:
South New Jersey communities built in the nineteenth and early twentieth century by African-Americans struggle to keep pace with the modern world, mainly as younger people have moved away and the communities populated mostly by older people are not preserved. There is a growing interest among preservationists, historians and residents of the remaining African-American towns to save them and acknowledging the role of such historic African-American sites enhances public understanding.
