Gainsharing at BP Exploration
Article Abstract:
BP Exploration (BPX), a UK oil production company, introduced performance-linked team-based gainsharing in 1993 to promote staff teamwork and commitment, while motivating staff to reach target goals. BPX's two-tiered gainsharing scheme links one group of 200 employees' payments to BPX's overall performance, while 90% of the employees receive payments based on their handling of the cost, production, and safety aspects of a particular asset such as oil or gas. The average 1994 payment was 13.7% of base pay, which included a 5% bonus tied to the year's cash flow plan.
