Travel by Amtrak offers passengers an opportunity to experience riding in bi-level trains with hotel-on-wheels dining and accommodations. THe cross-country trip may not arrive on time, but the leisurely trip suits some. Reservations should be made early, especially in summer. Fares vary.

A day-long bird-watching trip to the Farallon Islands, 27 miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge, is described. The trip, sponsored by the Oceanic Society, gives passengers the chance to see porpoises, whales, seals and exotic fish, in addition to the seabirds.
