Ice on the wings gets an extra look

Airlines have blamed ice on aircrafts' wings as factors in six major accidents. New Federal Aviation Administration rules require that planes be checked for ice buildup before departure. Pilots say inspection should take place outside the craft, and de-icing should be conducted again before takeoff.

The Federal Aviation Administration is considering raising the mandatory retirement age for pilots from 60 to 63. Many pilots contend the current age restriction is discriminatory, but some airlines and aviation safety experts think older pilots pose more of a risk.
