The infamous thief of Skagway, AK, Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith, terrorized town citizens in 1897 and 1898, as he and his cohorts robbed, murdered, and duped townspeople. Soapy's criminal activities ended in 1898 when he was killed in a shootout by the city engineer, Frank Reid.

McKenzie-Noyes: the Nome conspiracy: white-collar claim-jumpers

Politician Alexander McKenzie and Judge Arthur H. Noyes of Nome, AK, conspired to further their interests using their power. Noyes named McKenzie as receiver of mining claims that were awaiting the court's decision, enabling McKenzie to freely mine the claims himself.
