There is hardly any illiteracy, infant mortality is low, and people live nearly as long as Europeans. This is unusual for a part of a developing nation. The Keralites enjoy reading the newspaper and talking about politics.

John Muir is the author of 'A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf' published in 1916, a book that has influenced present-day environmentalists. It describes his walk from Louisville, KY, to the Gulf Coast of Florida. The route is retraced to determine the environmental damages since Muir's trek in 1867.
