The surrender of General Robert E Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA, marked the end of the long and bloody Civil War. Several important historic sites in the region have been restored and are open to the public at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park.

Yellowstone National Park was the first park created in the US by an act of Congress in 1872. Since then, 96 million people have traveled to observe its geysers and grizzly bears. The principle for determining intervals between eruptions of Old Faithful geyser is provided.
