An analysis of modern and traditional totem poles in the Southeast Alaska and British Columbia regions. While modern totem poles can be freer in their artistic form, traditional totem poles are laden with a meaning that can be ascertained by examining the larger cultural framework of the clan that erected the pole.

A personal account of hand rearing a red squirrel in Alaska and the damage that squirrels can do to a house. Squirrels are described as being, generally speaking, undesirable visitors to a house as they will burrow through insulation and happily gnaw through wood and wiring.
