National parks: heritage is decay

The facilities and grounds of US national parks and historic sites are deteriorating due to lack of government financial support. While the National Park Service estimates that it needs $3 billion to rehabilitate its facilities, Congress reduced its appropriation from $1.51 billion in 1994 to $1.47 billion in 1995.

Hawaii's freshwater threat
Article Abstract:
Cases of leptospirosis are tremendously increasing in Hawaii since 1996, with 52 cases in 1996 and about 60 in 1997. Leptospirosis, which is a tropical disease that is carried in freshwater streams and mud, can enter the body through exposed cuts and wounds and by drinking fresh water.

Growing threat to U.S. forests
Article Abstract:
Numerous trees though out the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California are being damaged by pollution from metropolitan centers. High ozone levels in the pollutants cause yellow and brown mottling on leaves and make trees more vulnerable to other diseases and pests.
