Hermene Hartman, the dynamic 56-year-old publisher of N'Digo, a free weekly newspaper for Chicago's African Americans, became famous in the city's African American affairs, heading up events like Jackson's Black Expo, the annual trade show held through the 1970s, to draw attention to Chicago's African-American owned businesses. Further, she plans to revive the Savoy magazine, the discontinued New York-based national glossy for the African American professionals.

Finance whiz Antoinette Wright, president and CEO of the DuSable Museum of African American History, has brought the museum which was struggling with its finances and identity, on solid footing financially with the largest expansion in 45 years. She believes that money is where the power is and if an institute is financially stabilized there is no limit for its success.

Maureen and Scott Barrett, longtime competitors in chili contests across the US, tasted chili in anticipation of their trip to the World Championship Chili Cookoff in Las Vegas in October 2004. They rated five top chilis in Chicago with Lindy's Chili Gertie's Ice Cream and Mellow Yellow being the top two.
