A man recounts the day he went fly-fishing with a friend in one of Alaska's numerous fishing grounds. The man catches a pink salmon, also called stream maggot because of its commonness and grotesque appearance. He eventually learns to respect the fish as a worthy test of his fishing skills.

Two men fish for Dolly Varden, a type of trout found in Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. The red-bellied fish were once considered a nuisance because they ate young salmon and salmon eggs. Today, Dolly Varden are popular fish among anglers because they are prevalent, big and beautiful.
