Mongolia: stepping up the pace
Article Abstract:
Mongolia is having a difficult time with privatization and the transition to a market economy. The country's economy is burdened by a foreign aid crisis, an oil crisis and a hard currency crisis, which may precipitate a crisis of confidence in the government. The Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP), the former organ of the Communist government, won the 1992 elections but may not prevail if economic problems continue. The MPRP contains some former communists who do not like the idea of a market economy. The National Democratic Party is the largest opposition party.
