Some US embassies and consulates in foreign countries are closing due to reductions in government funding. The State Dept.'s budget has decreased by 15-18% since 1990, and has prompted downsizing in several consular offices, including those in Zurich, Bourdeaux, Poland, Zaire and New Guinea.
