Canada: suffering 140-year currency low
Article Abstract:
The Canadian dollar (C$) has weakened significantly against the US dollar (US$) and has reached lows not seen since 1858. Economists attribute the currency's poor performance to Canada's slower productivity growth as compared to the US, its perceived dependence on commodities, and the differential between US and Canadian interest rates. The Bank of Canada has attempted to prop up the C$ by buying them for US$, but this measure has failed because it lacked credibility. The market is not convinced that the central bank will introduce any interest rate action to stabilize the currency. Canada can strengthen its dollar by implementing a credible interest rate increase and by sustaining broad-based investment growth.
