Car-rental companies are still encouraging renters to buy collision-damage or loss-damage waivers which waive the companies' right to hold the renter liable for any damage. The real cost of either insurance is about $1.50 per day, but the companies charge from $7-13 per day.

Frequent-renter programs

Automobile rental companies now offer frequent-renter programs in an effort to attract and keep customers. The programs of eight rental companies are evaluated for their rewards, services and management. Four agencies provide limited-area programs for frequent renters.

Hertz and Avis are promoting two package deals that include rental of their vehicles. Hertz offers lower prices to members of various frequent flier programs through Jun 30, 1996. Avis's promotion is a repeat of its one-way fly/drive program from 1995.
