A canine distemper virus epidemic in Serengeti lions (Panthera leo)
Article Abstract:
A canine distemper virus spread through the lion population of the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, in 1994. The lions contracted a fatal neurological disease which triggered grand mal seizures and myoclonus. The CDV is believed to have been contracted from domestic dogs inhabiting local villages close to the park. The epidemic killed 30% of Serengeti and Mara lions and its full effect on other carnivore species remains unknown.
