A fresh glass of frozen chaos
Article Abstract:
The collection of atoms in an amorphous solid like glass behaves as if rigidly frozen showing that chaotic patterns and rigidity can coexist in the absence of thermal motion. A chaotic density pattern which is unstable at high temperature may become locally stable below the dynamical transition temperature. This implies that frozen chaos occurs due to a random first-order transition within a system which lacks intrinsic energy function disorder.

Florida's mystery coral-killer identified
Article Abstract:
The pathogen for the coral disease that appeared on the Florida Reef Tract in Jun 1995 has been identified as a new species of Sphingomonas. Experiments show that the pathogen is easily transmissible. There was almost no disease recurrence on the reefs of the Florida Keys in 1996 and 1997, but new outbreaks were found in the western section of the Florida Reef Tract in 1996 and on the reefs north of Miami, FL, in 1997.

Before striking gold in gold-ruby glass: The chemistry of the magic ingredient in this ancient glass is no longer a mystery
Article Abstract:
Mossbauer spectroscopy was used to demonstrate that the red color of gold-ruby glass is monovalent in colourless glass, and forms linear bonds to adjacent oxygen atoms.
