The pathogen connection
Article Abstract:
There are arguments to support the idea that microbial agents can influence the occurrence of some autoimmune diseases. The agents involved and their processes are are not well understood. The Coxsackie B virus has been linked to autoimmune diabetes, and Horwitz and colleagues have found that Coxsackie B4 infection quickly provoked diabetes in transgenic mice, but not in non-transgenic littermates or in non-obese-diabetic (NOD) animals.

Lipid lunch for persistent pathogen
Article Abstract:
The pathogen that causes TB, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is able to persist for extended periods. However, new research has engineered new strains of M. tuberculosis which, lacking the gene for isocitrate lyase, have reduced survival rates. It is thought that disrupting the pathogen's fatty acid metabolism affects its survival ability.

Persistent pollutants in land-applied sludges
Article Abstract:
Research describing pollutants in sewage sludge applied to agricultural land is presented. In particular brominated diphenyl ethers, commonly used as flame retardants, are shown to be persistent at high levels.
