A keener eye than EGRET
Article Abstract:
Scientists have proposed a new gamma-ray telescope which will be far superior to today's Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope in virtually all respects. Called Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope, the new instrument will have a relatively low price tag of $300 million and its better field of view, sensitivity and angular resolution promise to provide scientists with new insights into all the known high-energy phenomena in the Universe.

In line for a new mission
Article Abstract:
Nuclear emission lines directly measure the abundances of various elements and isotopes. For example, the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment viewed lines from (56)Fe, (24)Mg, (20)Ne and others from a solar flare in 1991. Excited by energetic protons and alpha-particles, these nuclei de-excite by emitting gamma-rays. The strength of these emission lines are used to measure isotopic abundances in the Sun.

Impact consensus emerges
Article Abstract:
Scientists met in May 1995 to discuss their findings about the various phenomena observed after the impact of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with the planet Jupiter in July 1994. There was general agreement regarding the various flashes observed after impact, the size of the largest fragment and the explanations for the shapes and orientations of the dark spots at each impact site.
