Vaccine institute treads out a wary path
Article Abstract:
The new International Vaccine Institute (IVI), which will be based in a science park at Seoul National University, South Korea, will find it difficult to establish a clear role for itself as world health care becomes increasingly clouded by political issues. In the period to 2001, it will focus on epidemiological and burden of disease studies. It will also seek to assess demand for specific vaccines in Asia and undertake vaccine clinical trials and field studies. At a later stage, it will widen its activities to include laboratory research on possible vaccines and research into vaccine production quality and safety.

Japan's successful launch paves way for interplanetary missions
Article Abstract:
Japan's Institute of Space and Astronautical Science has successfully launched the world's first space-based radiotelescope, named the Highly Advanced Laboratory for Communications and Astronomy. The radiotelescope takes up a highly eccentric orbit ranging from a few hundred to 21,000 km in height. The next crucial step is the opening of the telescope's eight-meter antenna, after a few perigee-raising manoeuvres to raise its altitude are accomplished.

University challenges plagiarism judgment
Article Abstract:
The University of Hong Kong repealed a judgment of the High Court and Court of Appeal, clearing a faculty member of allegations of plagiarizing a questionnaire designed for an epidemiological study of lung cancer. The university based its decision on the view of epidemiologists that such questionnaires are freely accessible. However, the researcher who set forth the initial charges, questions the impartiality of the university's judgment.
