A new tropomyosin essential for cytokinesis in the fission yeast S. pombe
Article Abstract:
A hitherto unknown tropomyosin has been identified as the product of a genetic mutation in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe (S. pombe). The mutation, which affects the cdc8 gene, blocks the cell cycle from moving beyond cytokinesis. Analysis of S. pombe genomic clones yielded the new tropomyosin, which is an actin-binding protein whose likeliest function is to make up a portion of the F-actin contractile ring during cytokinesis.

ER-to-Golgi transport visualized in living cells
Article Abstract:
Proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) are channelled through the Golgi complex before being transported to their final destinations. It is now possible to follow the entire life history of a single transport intermediates in living cells, through new florescent tagging techniques. ER-to-Golgi transport has been visualized through the use of tso45 VSVG, a viral glycoprotein, tagged with green fluorescent protein.

A vertebrate actin-related protein is a component of a multisubunit complex involved in microtubule-based vesicle motility
Article Abstract:
Vertebrates have an actin-related cytoskeletal protein, actin-RPV, with several important functions including taking part in the dynactin complex and stimulating dynein-driven vesicle movement. These functions suggest that actin-RPV is unlike the other actins in participating in cytoplasmic movements by means of a microtubule-based system. Hence actin and related proteins may contribute to microtubule motility.
