A novel dimer configuration revealed by the crystal structure at 2.4 A resolution of human interleukin-5
Article Abstract:
A new model for the structure of human interleukin-5 is presented which could be useful in the design of therapeutic drugs for diseases involving these proteins. The new IL-5 dimer is shaped like an elongated ellipsoidal disk measuring 65*30*20 A. Each domain of the IL-5 dimer exhibits structural and fumctional similarities with other cytokine tertiary structures. But IL-5 is unique because each of its domain contains elements from its two chains.

Cloning of a disintegrin metalloproteinase that processes precursor tumour-necrosis factor-alpha
Article Abstract:
The tumour-necrosis factor(TNF)-alpha-converting enzyme (TACE) has been purified and its complementary DNA purified. Structural comparisons with other disintegrin-containing enzymes suggest that TACE is unique, with a sequence identity to the MADM enzyme and to the Drosophila homologue KUZ. The expression of recombinant TACE leads to the production of functional enzyme that transforms precursor TNF-alpha to the mature form.

CD21 is a ligand for CD23 and regulates IgE production
Article Abstract:
The cell-surface protein CD21 and immunoglobulin E (IgE) function as ligands for the molecule CD23; moreover, CD21 and CD23 both contribute to the immune response by regulating how much IgE is produced. Fluorescent liposomes were employed as probes to determine the immunological role of CD23 and CD21; CD23 was already known to be a type II transmembrane molecule and a low-affinity receptor for IgE.
