Extinction and colonization of birds on habitat islands
Article Abstract:
The distribution and abundance of eight scrub-breeding bird species in 34 habitat fragments and the urban matrix in southern California is determined by using point-count and transect surveys. It was found that fragment size, to a smaller extent, fragment age were the major extrinsic factors determining extinction and colonization and density indices of scrub birds were the major intrinsic factors.

The colony structure and population biology of invasive ants
Article Abstract:
Ants are among the most widespread and damaging of introduced species. Many invasive ants share a suit of characteristics facilitating their introduction, establishment, and subsequent range expansion. The population biology of invasive ants like Argentine ant and the red imported fire ant focusing on the role of sociality and colony structure in their success is reviewed.

New insights on cheetah conservation through demographic modeling
Article Abstract:
The most important factor in cheetah conservation may be adult survivorship. Earlier studies of endangered wild cheetah populations have argued cub predation is one of the most significant factor in limiting population growth, yet demographic models of cheetah population dynamics show juvenile survivorship is a relatively minor factor when compared to surviving adults.
