A palatal rete in the right whale?
Article Abstract:
The recent suggestion that the right whale (Balaenidae) has a specialized palatal rete is unfounded. The observation of a complex vascular system in the palate of rorqual whales led to the speculation that it functions in thermoregulation. Examination of right whale palates suggests a typical baleen whale vascular palate. The claim that such a palate functions in thermoregulation is contrary to the actual observed heat-conservation needs of the right whale.

A rete in the right whale
Article Abstract:
Recent dissection of a right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) revealed an organ that apparently serves to dissipate heat. This intraoral rete is located in the whale's jaw and protects its brain from being damaged by overly warm blood. When the whale's mouth is open, the organ is flushed with water and heat is exchanged.
