A place for space and smells
Article Abstract:
Animal studies have suggested that the hippocampus deals with a strictly limited information set. Wood and colleagues have added weight to the view of a general role for the hippocampus in memory. They recorded hippocampal neuron activity in rats undertaking an odor-memory task with environmental clues. The rats relied on non-spatial olfactory memory to undertake the task efficiently. Neurons whose activities depended on non-spatial variables were found, while some cells responded to certain combinations of properties.

Dendritic spine changes associated with hippocampal long-term synaptic plasticity
Article Abstract:
A local superfusion method was combined with two-photon imaging to investigated specific regions of the postsynaptic dendrite where synaptic changes occur. New spines were found to appear after induction of long-lasting functional enhancement of synapses. However no significant spine growth occurred in control regions on the same dendrite or in portions where long-term potentiation was blocked.
