Effectiveness, reversibility, and serum antibody titers associated with immunocontraception in captive white-tailed deer
Article Abstract:
The ability to control the fertility of white-tailed does by 3- and 2-porcine zonae pellucidae (PZP), as well as two protocols using one injection, was examined. For 1-3 years, the does were monitored for fawn production. Findings show that PZP vaccination among white-tailed does can produce contraception for one breeding season, is more effective with multiple rather than singular injection, is reversible within two years among 75% of the does, is responsible for elevated anti-PZP antibody titers, and can produce an antibody response for one breeding season.

Effect of Hurricane Andrew on survival and movements of white-tailed deer in the Everglades
Article Abstract:
Hurricane Andrew hit Florida in Aug 1992, with woody vegetation destroyed, especially hardwood hammocks. A study in which 32 white-tailed deer were monitored showed that all the deer survived, but their conception rates were affected, as was the survival of fawns, in the year after the hurricane. The deer did not appear to alter their home ranges as a result of the hurricane, which did not involve a large amount of rainfall. The deer may have left the hammocks before the hurricane, and their survival would have been affected if they had stayed there

The effect of immunocontraception on the behavior and reproduction of white-tailed deer
Article Abstract:
Wildlife population management has concentrated on selective hunting and trapping, but there are alternative methods such as trap/relocation and implanted steroid contraceptives. The behavioral and reproductive consequences of immunocontraception in a herd of white tailed deer were examined. Doses of porcine zona pellucida (PZP) were either administered with a single injection or two injections, and the two injection PZP method provided efficient contraception, with the one injection method proving effective only in the second year.
