A radical vascular connection
Article Abstract:
A new study has discovered another disorder related to endothelium-derived relaxing factor. Thomas et. al. found a possible connection between endothelial dysfunction and beta-amyloid peptide, which has been linked to Alzheimer's disease and age-associated neurodegeneration. Super-oxide dismutase (SOD) was found to prevent such damage by beta-amyloid. A number of caveats about the results exist, however. One is that O2(super -) production is only inferred and not measured. Another is the necessity f pretreatment with SOD to protect against the toxic effects of beta-amyloid, which has several implications. Third is the abnormal severity of beta-amyloid-mediated endothelial damage.

Blood traffic control
Article Abstract:
The arterial blood flow, which means the trafficking in the oxygenated red blood cells, is governed by local modulation of the diameter of small resistance vessels that suggest a role for the vasodilator nitric oxide (NO). The blood flow is precisely matched to the metabolic requirements by the help nitric oxide and haemoglobin.

A metabolic enzyme for S-nitrosothiol conserved from bacteria to humans
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the mechanisms used by the cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, mouse macrophages and Escherichia coli to protect themselves from the S-nitrosothiols used for defence purposes.
