Magneto-optical observation of twisted vortices in type-II superconductors
Article Abstract:
Magneto-optical images of YBa2Cu3O7-delta samples in the force-free configuration of a magnetic field are investigated. Several vortex lines were observed to twist together to form very stable structures. Some of the 'vortex twisters' were even observed to interact to generate wave-like dynamics. Data suggest that the thermodynamic phases of entangled vortices are inherently stable and may occupy a large part of the mixed-state phase diagram for type-II superconductors.

Why vortices matter
Article Abstract:
Below the temperature of a few degrees above absolute zero, the majority of a superconductor's useful functions are controlled by its reponse to external magnetic fields. The superconductor is threaded by magnetic vortices that control current flow through it.

Geometry spawns vortices
Article Abstract:
Research carried out with superconductors, has shown that the magnetic flux patterns they produce alters with the shape of the superconductor. Superconductors and magnetic field patterns are discussed.
